Carolyn's Notes

May 2005

In memory of my mom, Marty Long, who died this past March, I  honor the efforts and work of all those who meet twice a month at the Skein Lane Studio to knit and crochet for those in need. I also want to thank and honor those who bring in those beautifully finished items.  Just this week, one of our customers - Melissa - brought in a dozen hats for those undergoing chemotherapy. Thank you Melissa, and thank you all.

And my heartfelt thanks to all for your cards and words of support during Mom's illness and her death. I am forever grateful to you and my wonderful staff.

The cancer journey is over for my mother.

She fought a courageous battle and died on March 15.  Her strength, determination and courage will forever be an inspiration to her family.

Read Marty's obituary in the Oakland Tribune.

Again, thank you all for the wonderful support and kind thoughts.

Nearly four months have gone by since my last update on my mom.  The journey continues to be a difficult one, and I continue to admire her strength.  As the cancer is taking  over her body, she tells us often that  she is not ready to go yet.  If you see me on a day when I appear more serious ,  just  know that it is because I feel so sad about what my mom is experiencing.   Again, thank you for all your wonderful thoughts and support.

The chemo and cancer journey for my mother since early September has been a difficult one. The cancer that reappeared in her body in August has been treated with a clinical trial chemo protocol. The good news that we just learned yesterday is that it has been successful in reducing the tumors. And that truly is good news because she has been so sick with this treatment that we began to wonder if it was worth it. However, I think she is emotionally ready to have the third treatment next week. And now she is working hard to be physically ready. Again, my heartfelt thanks you to all who continue to offer your wonderful support. And my many thanks to the community group who continues to offer their time to make garments for those who are in need.

As many of you are aware the community project – Chemo Hats - took on a new meaning for me last fall when my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer. And in early 2003, three of my life-long friends were diagnosed with various forms of cancer. My friends continue to do well.

And, as many of you know, my mom has had a relatively good year with her battle with cancer; however, in mid-July, the news took a turn for the worst. At that time the cancer surfaced in her brain. The prognosis was not good; but once again, Marty Jane as I affectionately call her, “won” that step. With radiation and determination, her thought processes are back to normal. Now the cancer has appeared elsewhere in her body and her chemo appointments begin again. She is determined and continues to demonstrate that a strength that I didn’t realize she has. Thank you to all who continue offer your wonderful support.

The community group continues to knit and crochet chemo hats. Just recently one young lady brought in many hats that she had just knit. I have delivered many of the hand crafted hats and scarves to the cancer dept at Kaiser in Oakland, They express their heartfelt thanks. The community group continue to knit and crochet sweaters for Teddy Bears to be given to the fire department for children in crisis. Skein Lane also supports the Woody Woof Project with a 10% yarn purchase discount.

Again, we continue to be inspired by all who are willing donate their time and stitches to help others.
